Won Hak Sunim is a Ukrainian Zen monk and one of Hyon Gak my younger Dharma-brothers. He did the traditional monastic training in Korea under his Teacher, the eminent monk Zen Master Dae Bong, who is my elder Dharma-brother.
During the war that began with Russia’s aggressive interventions in Ukraine beginning in 2014, Won Hak Sunim interrupted his practicing life in Korea — in the safety and quiet of the monastery — to return to Ukraine to serve his people in their suffering. Won Hak Sunim leads the Lvivi Zen Center and several other satellite groups. His own brother is stationed at the war-front.
