In many kinds of spiritual retreats, the practice of “journal writing” is emphasized. And this can be helpful for certain kinds of spiritual pursuits, especially where there is some therapeutic goal or process that is being engaged. But what about in Zen retreats? Is it helpful for our meditation to be recording our reflections in words and memories during the course of the retreat? Does such a practice help with our meditation?
