The Insane Engineering of the James Webb Telescope

I took a break with some porn today. I tuned in to the live broadcast of the launch of the James Webb Telescope. And then I watched this video about some of the engineering that went into this thing that is moving to position to take photos of the dawn of time.

Insane engineering. This documentary makes the extraordinary design simple and clear. The things the human spirit can do! And the species that could plow $10 billion into attempting to know the birth of the universe, and pursue that noble aim, while not more automatically committing that nation-sized budget to feeding other, weaker members of the same species, it astounds the imagination, on parallel tracks of amazement. That the two impulses can coexist together, at such extremity, in the same creature, is an endless wonder to me.
