Hearing the distinct THUCK-a THUCK-a THUCK-a THUCK-a of helicopter — again! — overhead this little mountain hut in the Peloponnesus where we’re staying, I spring from sweaty sheets after the usual afternoon siesta to confirm: Another military-grade service helicopter not far directly overhead, heading from the ocean below our hut back into the mountains behind us, laden with its “Bambi bucket” of seawater towards another fire nearby. The heart races.

We rush to our satellite-imaging site to check locations; someone else checks a live update news site. There is just this constant need to tampen down flame-ups.
