Marcus Aurelius and the Zen of the Blue Danube

It has been such a precious honor to spend the last seven years living literally on the banks of this storied river – – the Danube. (Our Zen Center Regensburg is located two city blocks in from the river, approximately two buildings to the right of the cathedral.)

To wake up in the darkness at 4 AM every day, and to do daily silent meditation literally on the very spot — the very foundation stones themselves! — of the building from which Emperor Marcus Aurelius commanded his Second Expeditionary Legion in the wars against the Germanic hordes, during the period when he was writing his classic “Meditations”, this is the very definition of “blessing” itself.
